Mr. Glenn Robert Yeakey, age 87 of Hendersonville died Sunday, October 9th, 2016 at the Elizabeth House. He was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1929; the only child of the late Fern and Glenn T. Yeakey. Glenn Robert Yeakey was known for his love of family, hard work, and adventure. After graduating as an electrical engineer from Michigan Tech in 1946, Glenn served in the Air Force at Lowry Air Force Base where he met his beloved wife, Nancy, on a blind date. They were married for 63 years, traveling the world for his work with Corning Glass as a managing director of several subsidiaries. While they resided in India, Taiwan and Indonesia, specific work projects took Glenn to other far-flung places like Iran, Nigeria, Guatemala and Korea. After retiring from Corning Glass, Glenn's new found passion was sailing, tacking and reaching over 20,000 nautical miles throughout the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic coast, from his home in Naples, Florida, with only one notable Coast Guard rescue (when he crewed instead of captained). Glenn served as the Commodore of the South Florida Yacht Council where he worked to improve boater and marine life safety within the state. Glenn was always game for new experiences whether it was cruising the Amazon River, scuba diving in underwater caves in the Bahamas, hiking Machu Picchu, or penguin watching in Antarctica. His love for adventure took him to all seven continents. When not sailing, Glenn loved to ski, especially in Vail and Telluride, Colorado. Quite the fashionable skier on the slopes, his blue jean overalls and reflective tape jacket markings while zigzagging down the slopes, will be fondly remembered by all. Glenn is survived by his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Pat and her husband Ed, and their children Ryan and Sean; his son, Mike and his daughters, Megan and Amanda; and by his faithful dog, Butch. All have treasured the energy, drive and enthusiasm of the "tour director", who lived a very rich and fulfilling 87 years. A celebration of Glenn's life will be held later in October. An online register book is available for family and friends by visiting www.thosshepherd.com. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center is in charge of the arrangements.
