Gladys Laverne (Hughes) Williams, 82, died unexpectedly Saturday, February 11, 2017 at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. Gladys was born on May 20, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Hudson Hughes and Lollie Ophelia (Broome) Hughes Sr. She attended Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Ohio. Gladys was retired from General Electric. She enjoyed fishing and gardening in her spare time. To cherish her memory, she leaves a granddaughter: Ophelia L. Williams; and a host of friends and family. Gladys passing was preceded by her parents; a daughter: Shenita L. Williams on March 7, 2015; two sisters: Dearie Ophelia and Ophelia "Little Sis"; four brothers: Charles Hughes, Williams Hughes, Robert Hughes, and Hudson Hughes Jr.; and one special friend: William Hooks Sr. Friends may gather on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Merkle Funeral Service, South Monroe; 14567 South Dixie Highway (734) 241-7070. A Homegoing Celebration will follow at 1:00 p.m. also at Merkle's, with Reverend Allen Overton, pastor of Second Missionary Baptist Church, officiating.
