Gertrude was born on Nov. 21, 1925 in Evanston, IL and passed away peacefully on April 9, 2017 at Rolling Hills Manor, Zion, IL. Gertrude graduated from Waukegan High School in 1943. She started her working career at Western Union during WWII, after raising her family she returned to work as a secretary at Great Lake Naval Station. She retired from Abbott Laboratories in 1993 after a distinguished 25-year career. Gert loved to travel, she went around the world several times, visiting every continent except Antarctica. Her travels also tied into her passion for genealogy, tracing her ancestors back multiple generations in Holland and Germany. Gert also volunteered her talents to Vista (St. Therese) Hospital. Gertrude is survived by her son Gary (Audrey Helgesen) Vardeman and her daughter Patricia (Wally) Miltimore both of Wadsworth, IL. One sister Ann Stapleton of Libertyville, IL Five grandchildren Eric and Jarod Bryer, Christina (Miltimore) McGahan, Janette (Miltimore) Noerenberg and Richard Miltimore and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph A and Margaret (Snelten) Selzer, her daughter Joyce (Tom) Bryer, her brothers Joseph Jr, Richard and Peter Selzer and her sister Agnes (Raymond) Olsen. Her children's father Charles F. Vardeman Sr. and her loving companion Walter Schmidt. A memorial mass will be held 11am Friday, April 21, 2017 at St. Dismas Church, 2600 Sunset Ave. Waukegan, Illinois 60087 with a visitation prior starting at 10am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
