She was the third of four sisters, Ruth, Helen, Gertrude Elaine, and Janet. Elaine attended New Kensington schools and Grove City College, finishing her formal education there in 1949. At Grove City, Elaine met Richard Flinn, whom she married in 1951. They settled in Pittsburgh's Shadyside district. Elaine worked at The Mellon Institute while Richard attended the University of Pittsburgh. In 1956, Elaine, Richard, and their four children settled in the Crescent Hills section of Pittsburgh and were early members of the then-new Penn Hills Presbyterian Church. In subsequent years, the family lived in Allentown (PA), Columbus (OH), and Denver (CO), before returning to Pittsburgh in 1983 and settling in the Fox Chapel area. Elaine was active in the Church in these various locations, and in Pittsburgh she was an active member of the Guyasuta Garden Club, the PEO, Twentieth Century Club, the Pittsburgh Symphony Society, and the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, where she will be interred. A memorial service will be held at that Church in May.
