Gerard Francis "Gerry" Lane Esq.
Gerard Francis "Gerry" Lane, Esq., age 86, of Hingham, formerly of Holbrook, died peacefully, Thursday, October 13, 2016 at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, surrounded by his loving family. Gerard was born in East Boston, October 8, 1930, to the late Richard F. and Julia Sheila (Kiernan) Lane. He was raised in Arlington and was a graduate of Malden Catholic High School. At the age of twenty, he graduated from Boston College with a degree in mathematics and was a member of the ROTC and Captain of the rifle team. After the Korean War, he graduated from the Boston College Law School in 1959. He had lived in Hingham for forty-two years, previously living in Holbrook for sixteen years. He was also a lifelong summer resident of Marshfield. Gerry Lane was a well-known and highly respected attorney for over fifty years, practicing in Quincy, Marshfield and Boston. He was accomplished in all phases of law and was licensed to practice in every court in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and in the Federal Judicial system up to and including the United States Supreme Court. He was a highly decorated, disabled United States Army veteran of the Korean War. He served as a First Lieutenant with the Seventh Infantry Division as a forward observer and was severely wounded on October 15, 1952 at the summit of "Triangle Hill" in one of the bloodiest battles during the "Operation Showdown" campaign. Gerry received the Purple Heart Medal, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor (with oak leaf cluster), and the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Campaign Stars. Mr. Lane served as the Judge Advocate of the Marshfield DAV and was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. Following his military service, Gerry served as a Massachusetts parole officer for ten years and was also a member of the Holbrook Zoning Board of Appeals and later served as the Holbrook Town Moderator. During his career, Gerry ran twice for higher office, once for State Senator and once for District Attorney of Norfolk County. Gerard was a longtime parishioner of the Church of the Resurrection in Hingham and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed the ocean and boating. Gerry was devoted to his family and especially to his four cherished grandchildren. He was the beloved husband for fifty-eight years of Ruth J. (Deschamps) Lane; devoted father of Tammy Quinlan of Quincy, Kimberly A. Lane of Chelmsford and Gerard F. Lane, Jr., Esq. and his wife Sonja of Marshfield; loving grandfather of Michael, Nathan and Joshua Quinlan, and Jayden Lane; dear brother of Bernard J. Lane of NH, Eugene T. Lane of FL and the late Richard F. Lane, Jr. Gerry is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Church of the Resurrection, 1057 Main Street, Hingham, on Tuesday, October 18, at 10 oclock. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
