HEAPHY, Geraldine Rita "Gerry", 96, of Louisville passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Jefferson Manor with her family by her side. She was born November 11, 1919 in Albany, NY a daughter of the late Vincent Laraia and Anna Dougherty Laraia. Gerry was a graduate of Albany High School and received her secretarial certificate from Mildred Elley Business School. She was a financial secretary for General Electric in Schenectady, NY for many years. In 1939, Gerry met Hayden F. Heaphy, Sr. at an office Christmas party at General Electric, and that was the start of a long courtship. In 1942, Hayden joined the Army Air Corps and served in the Philippines. He and Gerry kept in touch during the time he was away, writing letters and sending cards. Hayden was honorably discharged in November of 1945 and returned to his GE position in Schenectady, NY, where they resumed their courtship. Gerry and Hayden married at St. James Church in Albany, NY on September 11, 1948 and soon started a family. Together they had four children and eventually made Louisville their home. In 1953, Hayden was transferred with General Electric at the start-up of the appliance park. Gerry became an active member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. There she worked in the Great Books Program at the parish school. She served on the Human need and concerns committee and served a minister of the Eucharist. She volunteered and was a board member for Eastern Area Community Ministries. Starting in Albany, NY she served over 60 years for the American Red Cross supporting blood banks, where she was chairman of the Blood Board and also served with the Red Cross Disaster Services. Gerry also dedicated many hours of her time to the sewing society at St. Joseph Children's Home. She received many awards and recognitions for her volunteer services throughout the years with the American Red Cross, and was volunteer of the year in Jefferson County. Gerry was Kentucky Colonel. She enjoyed annual vacations back in the Northeast. Later in life took several tours in Europe and the United States. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her siblings, Rose Shea and Joseph, Vincent and Francis Laraia. She is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, Hayden F. Heaphy, Sr.; children, Hayden F. Heaphy, Jr. (Jann), Virginia C. Belmont (Paul, Jr.), Thomas V. "Tom" Heaphy (Regi) and Lawrence J. "Larry" Heaphy (Sheree); grandchildren, Hayden Francis Heaphy, III (LaVonne), William Belmont (Sara), Paul Belmont, III (Nancy), Alexander Belmont, Lisa Willenborg (David), Michael Chikar, Marti DeMitchell, Lawrence Hayden Heaphy and Lydia Grace Heaphy. She also leaves to cherish her memory 14 great-grandchildren, Maddyn, Hayden, Samuel, Holly, Emily, Paul IV, Timothy, Rebecca, Magdalyne, David, Anna, Audrey, Sky and Hunter; Gerry's sister, Dorothy Magin and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 20th at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 7813 Shelbyville Road. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19th at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road, "in St. Matthews". Memorial gifts may be made in the form of contributions to American Red Cross-Louisville Chapter or Eastern Area Community Ministries.
