Gerald F. McSwain, 73, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 12th from complications of a recent illness. Gerald "Jerry" was born on December 26th, 1943 in Gastonia to Broadus "Pat" McSwain and Catherine Todd McSwain. He attended Patterson High School and Pfeiffer University. Jerry also served in the Air National Guard from 1965 to 1971. Jerry was married to Linda Turbeville for 47 wonderful years. Jerry and Linda's family began to grow in 1972 with the birth of their first son Patrick. Approximately four years later, their second son Michael was born and approximately four years later their son David was born. Jerry and Linda have two amazing grandchildren in Julia McSwain and Amelia McSwain. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Broadus 'Pat' and Catherine as well as brother Broadus 'Little Pat' McSwain. Surviving are his loving wife Linda McSwain, and sons Patrick, Michael, and David (wife Allison) and two grandchildren Julia and Amelia. In addition, sister Susan Ramsey and husband Danny, brother Doug McSwain and wife Alyce, and Pat Hill and husband Richard. Jerry worked in communications and information technology for most of his career. He had a long and successful career in radio, working with his father and brother at WGNC and WZXI in Gastonia until the radio station was sold in 1986. Jerry also worked at Jefferson-Pilot Data Services, Inc. as a computer programmer and later as a division manager. Jerry held the position of President at McSwain Communications, McSwain Properties, and McSwain Investments. Jerry also was an initial investor and served on the Board of Directors at Alliance Bank & Trust from 2003 until 2017. He volunteered his time at the Optimist Club, Rotary Club, V.P. United Way, and Gaston County Planning. Jerry was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Gastonia. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 16, 2017 at First United Methodist Church. A reception for family and friends will immediately follow in the Family Life Center. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the columbarium of First United Methodist Church.
