Stanley, George 5/17/1918 - 10/12/2016 Au Gres, Michigan George Stanley of Au Gres, Michigan passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at St. Mary's of Michigan Skilled Nursing in Standish, Michigan with family at his bedside. George was born May 17, 1918 to the late Peter and Anna Stanley. In the early 1950's, George married his beloved wife, Frieda Schneider on September 6, 1952. George was an Army veteran from 1941-1945 serving as a searchlight operator of the Coast Guard Artillery in Newfoundland. George and Frieda lived in various parts of the United States and finally settled back to his home town, Au Gres, Michigan in 1995. George worked hard as a custodian and had a real love of harness racing which he shared with his wife. He was a very loving, devoted husband and cared for his wife right up to her passing on March 14, 2000. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #7717. George loved sports. He was a loyal Tiger, Lions, University of Michigan and Michigan State University fan. He told many stories to his family but one special story was that he saw Babe Ruth play ball. George was a devoted fan and follower of the Detroit Tigers. Just a week before his passing, he and his nephew were talking Tiger talk. George is survived by his sister, Mary Malec, of Roselle, Illinois; many loving nieces, nephews, and their families; very close friends, Robert and Mary Ann Gardner of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. George was preceded in death by his wife, Frieda; three brothers, John, Peter Jr., and William; sisters-in-law, Marie Stanley, Ruth Stanley, and Mary Stanley; brother-in-law, Chester Malec; great nephew, Troy Holland. George's family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the physicians and nursing staff of St. Mary's of Michigan Skilled Nursing for all of their wonderful care and concern shown to our uncle, George Stanley. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church, 415 South Court Street, Au Gres, Michigan. Family will greet friends at the church Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of mass. Interment will follow in Linwood Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mark Catholic Church and Au Gres Christian Charities Food Pantry. Online condolences may be offered at www.bureshfuneralhomes.com .
