Gene E. "Beno" Kessman
GENE KESSMAN BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS — Gene E. "Beno" Kessman, 85, passed Saturday evening, October 15, 2016. Born March 21, 1931, in Worden, Illinois, he was son of Frederick and Henrietta Kessman. He married Doris Lee Owens on May 26, 1967. He served life caring about his many friends; served his country by serving in the U.S. Army in Korea, earning military honors including the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars, United Service Medal Combat Infantry Badge, One Overseas Bar and a National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veteran of Foreign Wars, and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Belvidere, Illinois. Devoted to his work of 71 years for Cassens Transport, he was the longest tenure in the company's history. He was instrumental in the design and development of auto transports and the training of dozens of future drivers. A generous person, he was always willing to help and a friend to everyone he met. Beno is survived by his wife Doris Lee of nearly 50 years, stepsons Terry (Pam) and Tom (JoAnne) Owens, grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob (Lindsay) Owens, great-grandchildren, Chase and Lucy Owens, sisters JaNette (Jack) Minner and Gloria (Lynn) Perry, sister-in-law Gerry Kessman, and several nieces and nephews. Loved ones that have passed before are parents, Frederick and Henrietta Kessman, brother Joyce Kessman, nephew Scott Nelson and great-granddaughter Elsa. A celebration of Beno's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at Anderson Funeral Home in Belvidere. Burial will be at Belvidere Cemetery. Memorials may be made to OSF St. Anthony Foundation in care of the Hematology Center, the Atrium Memory Care Center in Rockford, Illinois, or Immanuel Lutheran Church.
