In memory of
Gay Alexander June 3, 1929-April 10, 2017 San Jose Gaynelle Justena (Williams) Alexander was born on June 3, 1929 in Oakland, California to Loretta and Jiles Williams. She was raised in Oakland and graduated from Fremont High School in 1945. At the age of 16, she attended the University of California at Berkeley, graduating in 1949. Gay started her career as an educator. She met a Canadian named Harold Alexander at a sorority party in Seattle in the mid 1950s. Gay and Harold married in 1958 and moved to Vancouver Island. The Alexanders' first child, Claudia Alexander, was born in 1959. Shortly thereafter, the family relocated to Oakland and then eventually Santa Clara County, where the couple's three additional children were born: David, John and Suzanne. Gay would go on to pursue her lifelong love of books, becoming a librarian for the Sunnyvale Public Library for many years. She was known for her lively story-telling hour, where she would expose young children to the work of famous authors. As the Silicon Valley developed around her, Gay decided she wanted to be a part of it. She bought a home in Cupertino in 1976 that was just up the street from a small company named "Apple Computer." She attended Atlanta University and received a Master's degree in Library Science in 1984. She would go on to become a corporate librarian at Intel Corp. She sat next to Intel's co-founder Gordon Moore. She would often recall the day staffers rolled away typewriters for the last time and Mr. Moore plugged in his first computer. Gay was a devoted mother and wife. She was renowned for her Parker House Rolls, her book recommendations and her community involvement. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., The Links Inc., Jack and Jill of America Inc. and the Christian Science Church. She passed away on April 10, 2017, after a brave fight against Parkinson's Disease. She is survived by her children: David Alexander and daughter-in-law Shawanda Alexander, Suzanne Alexander, and grandchildren: Bria Alexander, Brandon Alexander, Carol Ryan and Robert Ryan. Services will be held Thursday, April 27 at 12:30 p.m. with a repast following the service at Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Chapel of the Oaks, 300 Curtner Ave, San Jose, CA. 95125.
