PEKIN ~ Gary Richard Turner, 67, of Pekin, passed away at 1:55 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Kindred Hospital in Peoria. Born December 19, 1948 in Cypress to Robert Clinton and Teella Mae (Gore) Turner, he married Charlotte Kay Benefield on June 21, 1968 in Pekin. She survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Kerri D. Turner of Pekin; six grandchildren, Jakob Johnson of Pekin, Zachary Burdess of Peoria, Emma Turner of Pekin, Audrey Turner, Pierson Burdess and Madison Burdess, all of Marquette Heights and two sisters, Ruth Ann Hamlin of South Fulton, TN and Vertes “Cork” (Jerry) Richardson of Delavan. He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Rita Kay Burdess and Kelly Jean Turner and one sister, Loetta Richardson. A United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the infantry and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He worked at Caterpillar, Inc. for 30 years, retiring in 1997 from building transmissions in Building KK in East Peoria. He also had worked for K & R Trucking for almost 9 years. Gary will be remembered by his family for his big heart and that he would do anything for anybody. He was a Harley man and loved riding his motorcycle. He was a member of Broom Tree Fellowship in Pekin. His funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Chuck Grogan will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Prairie Haven Cemetery in Pekin, with military rites accorded by the United States Army and the Tazewell Military Rites Team.
