Gary Wayne Tankesley Age: 74 • Waynesboro Gary Wayne Tankesley, 74, passed away Friday, October 14, 2016 in Augusta Health in Fishersville. Mr. Tankesley was born on August 3, 1942 in Staunton, Virginia, a son of the late Samuel and Mabel (Monroe) Tankesley. Gary was a member of West Waynesboro Church of Christ and attended Westminster Presbyterian Church. He retired from Hershey Chocolate in Stuarts Draft. After retirement, Gary worked for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries in Verona. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed gardening, and was a dedicated New York Yankees fan. Most of all, spending time with his daughter and his grandson, brought him the most happiness. Surviving is a daughter, Stacy Long and her husband Russell of Fishersville; a brother, Boyd Tankesley of Staunton; a grandson, Jakob Long of Crimora; a niece, Kimberley T. White and her husband Phil of Richmond and their children, Zachary and Jonathan Smiley; and numerous extended family members also survive. The family would like to give a special "Thank-You" to Dr. Rob Marsh for his care and kindness towards Mr. Tankesley. A Memorial service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2016 in the Hammond Chapel on Barterbrook Road, Staunton by Rev. April Cranford. A private burial will be conducted in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jakob Long, Seth Knight, Treavor Norman, Billy Knight, Austin Shiflett, Charlie Gilbert, Zachary Smiley and Jonathan Smiley. It was Gary's wishes that memorial contributions be made to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, 517 Lee Highway, Verona, Virginia 24482.
