S. Frederic Johanson, 72, of Bloomington, IN, formerly of Tinley Park, IL and Homewood, IL, died October 11, 2016 with his family by his side. Born June 11, 1944 in Evanston, IL to Lorentz A. and Dorothy (Bergh) Johanson. He graduated from Haverford College in 1965; completing his PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1969. He was a professor of Ancient Greek and History at the University of Richmond and Acadia University before switching careers to work in IT at the University of Chicago until his retirement in 2012. He loved travel and was an avid history buff. He was active in the Civil War Roundtable, first in Chicago then in Bloomington. He was a diehard soccer enthusiast, fantastic chef, and a lifelong Cubs fan. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rosalie (Ryan) Johanson; his children Erika (Ulrik) Knudsen of Bloomington and Karl Johanson of New York; his grandchildren Jack and Kaj Knudsen, and his stepgrandson Max Knudsen.
