Fred Simon
Fred A. Simon LAFAYETTE - A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, October 17, 2016, at 6:45 PM in La Chapelle de Martin & Castille in Lafayette, for Fred A. Simon, age 66, who passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 in Lafayette. There will be a Catholic Memorial Mass on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Maurice at 10:30 AM. A private inurnment will follow at a later time. Reverend Francis Fontenot will conduct the Monday night Celebration of Life. Fr. Joseph Breaux, Pastor of St. Alphonsus will celebrate the Funeral Mass on Tuesday. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Michele Boulet Simon; his sons, Casey Simon and his wife, Pamela, and Chad Simon and his wife, Christie; his daughter, Amanda Simon Daigle and husband, Scotty; and his grandchildren, Collin, Spencer, Alexandra, Victoria, Genevieve, Mason, Lacey, Gavin, and Kayla. He was preceded in death by his father, Loland Simon. Fred was a loving and dedicated husband and father. He retired at the age of 55, after 32 years of service with the LA Dept of Transportation. He returned a portion of his life in service to his community. In his kids' youth, he served initially as a youth coach, mentoring numerous young boys and girls, not only in the finer points of sport, but also of sportsmanship and lessons of life. Later he further served as President of the Judice area youth athletics association. He also served as a board member at the 3rd District Federal Credit Union and most recently served on the board and as a consultant for the local water district. His retirement years were spent doing many of the hobbies and activities he enjoyed the most. He was an avid duck hunter and an even more avid fisherman. He never met a spot that had only one fish, often times circling a spot for hours looking for a follow up strike. He enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden and had a magic green thumb for anything that touched his hand on the way into the ground. He loved to cook, especially for a group or a gathering. There was always a pot of rice waiting for a magnalite full of the latest batch of sauce, etoufee, gravy, or gumbo. Fred enjoyed officiating basketball at all levels and was a central and active member, trainer, mentor and scheduler with the local LSHAA chapter. Fred was gregarious and outgoing and never met a stranger in a room that he couldn't find common ground with and strike up a conversation. He was a jack of all trades. Whether it was a simple task, a complicated project, a social group, or a loosely coordinated effort of any sort, he always seemed to work his way into a central and active part of the successes. He will be missed by his family, friends, and all those he touched during his 66 years here on this earth. The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN location on Monday from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made in Fred Simon's name to the Carpenter House, 923 W. Pinhook Rd., Lafayette, LA 70503.
