In memory of
Frank O. Horton III, M.D.
HORTON Frank O. III M.D. Frank O. Horton III, M.D., age 69, of Toledo, passed away peacefully in his home on October 10, 2016. Frank earned his bachelor's degree from Morehead State University in 1969 and graduated from the Medical College of Ohio in 1973. He served his internship at Hurley Hospital in Flint, MI and residences at Denver General Hospital and The Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Horton served both his pre and post-doctoral pulmonary fellowships at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences. Upon starting his pulmonary practice at The Toledo Hospital in 1979, he added another dimension to his practice: sleep medicine. Dr. Horton was one of the first doctors to practice sleep medicine in the United States and the first to bring sleep disorder treatment to Northwest Ohio in the early 1980s, which lead to sleep medicine accreditation for The Toledo Hospital and eventually ranking as the 49th best department in the U.S. to treat sleep disorders. Dr. Horton was a member of numerous professional societies and medical associations, including service as the President of the American Lung Association of Northwest Ohio and the Director of Transitional Care Unit at The Toledo Hospital. Frank enjoyed traveling, especially to Napa Valley and exploring the Western United States. He was an avid fan of the Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma Sooners and Ohio State Buckeyes. An excellent athlete himself, Frank ran cross country and played basketball in high school, leading his basketball team to a city championship his senior year. He also liked to play tennis and golf, once golfing a round with the former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, in Florida. Frank loved the arts, planting flowers, classical music, bird watching, and science fiction and mystery novels and films. He is lovingly survived by his wife of 29 years, Susan (Madden) Horton; his two children, Frank IV and Nicholas; grandchildren, Faith and William; and his sister, Sylvia Layne. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 16, 2016 from 1:00-7:00 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. Services will begin with prayers in the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. on Monday, October 17, 2016 and proceed to Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2240 Castlewood Dr., Toledo, OH 43613, for 10:00 a.m. funeral Mass. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be considered to Blessed Sacrament Parish and Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. As published in The Blade
