Frank J. Dowd
Frank J. Dowd “FJ”, 83, of Springfield passed away April 15, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Frank, son of the late Arthur and Agnes (Gahan) Dowd, was born in Holyoke on April 19, 1933. At a young age he was a semi-professional boxer. He then proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine. Frank, a lifetime Mason, went on to become a 30 year veteran of the Springfield Fire Department. He took great pride in being the Drill Sergeant for the department at the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade. FJ’s many joys in life included biking, kayaking, vacationing in Narragansett, Rhode Island, walking his Black Lab (Chesty) and spending time with friends. Above all, his greatest pride and joy was his family and time spent together. He will be missed by all who knew him, especially his loving wife of over 60 years, Nabiha (Arrab) Dowd; his sons, Frank Dowd Jr. of Springfield, James J. Dowd and Nicole Ghedini of East Longmeadow, Kevin Dowd and his wife Kristen of Framingham; his daughters, Darlene Dowd of Springfield, Theresa Dowd Pessolano and her husband Edward of Springfield, and Caroline Dowd Calcasola and husband Dino of East Longmeadow; his brother, Ret. Springfield Police Michael Dowd and wife Roberta of Wilbraham; his grandchildren, Kaila, Kellie, James, Talya, Dominic, Channing, Vincent, and Olivia; and many extended family members and friends. Visiting Hours for Frank will be held Sunday, April 23, 2017 from 1PM to 4PM at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield. Funeral Services will be held April 24, 2017 beginning at 9AM at Sampson’s followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11AM in Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson Street, Springfield. Rites of Committal and Interment will follow at 1PM in the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Frank’s memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
