Francis Jon Mayer, age 51, of Rudyard, Michigan passed away early Saturday morning, February 11, 2017 at the Hospice of the EUP – Hospice House. Fran was born on June 2, 1965 in St. Ignace, Michigan. He graduated from Rudyard High School with the Class of 1983. He worked as a carpenter on Mackinac Island and various other places in Michigan. Most recently, he worked in South Dakota. He was a member of the Michigan Regional Carpenters Union Local #202, the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Rudyard. Fran enjoyed spending time at his family hunting camp, where he would often be the cook. He was very fond of his dog: Spike. He also enjoyed the I-500 and being the gas man for Mayer Racing #9. Fran was a very hard worker and the toughest man we have ever known. Anyone who knew Fran knew that his nick name was "Frantastic". Fran is survived by his parents: Francis and Connie (Furlott) Mayer of Rudyard, MI; three sisters: Colette (Andy) Cozort, Carrie Mayer, and Michelle (Ron) Coffey all of Rudyard, MI; and three brothers: Faron "Fud" (Natalee) Mayer of Mackinac Island, MI, Anthony "Eep" (Dena) Mayer of Rudyard, MI, and Aaron (Katie) Mayer of Sault Ste. Marie, MI. He is also survived by four sons: Brandon Mayer and Trevor Mayer of Pennsylvania, Cody (Kerry) Mayer of Rudyard, MI, and Jason (Shelby) Bennett of Macomb, MI; and four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rudyard with Father Edward Baafi as celebrant. Friends may call at the church that day from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass. Burial will be at North Rudyard Cemetery later this spring. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Hospice of the EUP or St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rudyard. Arrangements are being handled by C.S. Mulder Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
