CARROLLTON - Francis "Gene" Baker, 70, of Carrollton died Friday, October 14, 2016, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield. He was born May 14, 1946, in Carrollton, the son of John Coleman and Cecile Mabel Goodall Baker. He married Linda Eldridge on June 5, 1976, in Carrollton, and she survives. Also surviving are three sons, John (Adriane) Baker of Carrollton, Stanley Baker of Wisconsin and Matthew Baker of Wisconsin; one daughter, Greta (Mike) Lovel of Carrollton; 12 grandchildren, Breana, Kayla, Colton and Jacob Lovel, Kaitlyn, Aurora, Alex, Kirk, Savannah, Elaina and Kiya Baker, and Lucas Torres; two great-grandchildren, Sadie Ruyle and Jesse McCarty; and one sister, Bertha Dean of Carrollton. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kirk Stayton; three brothers, Hal, W. Ray and John Baker; and four sisters, Alice Faye Sonneborn, V. Louise Combs, Lillie Mae Baker and M. Nadine Combs. He served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967. He retired from Olin in 2009 after 40 years of service. He was very active in the Carrollton community. He served on the Carrollton School Board for four years, served as mayor for 12 years, and currently was serving as an alderman. He was an American Legion commander and a member of Carrollton Lions Club and Carrollton First Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his family. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at Carrollton First Baptist Church with burial to follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Wrights. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Carrollton American Legion.
