In memory of
Flora Greene Saunders
Flora Greene Saunders, 85, of Charlotte died Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Novant Presbyterian Medical Center Main. A native of Bessemer City, Flora was born to the late Taylor Suel Greene and Mary Ruth Cash Greene on March 30, 1932. Her family moved to York County, SC on Highway 160, 3 miles below the Kings Mountain National Park to a small community called Bethany, 6 miles outside Clover. Flora attended and graduated from Clover High School where she was an honor student in 1950. After graduation, she attended Columbia Commercial College in Columbia, SC. To cover her room and board, Flora lived with a family and tended to their small child. The father of the family was manager of U.S. Rubber Company and he was transferred to Charlotte. Since they were expecting their second child, they asked Flora to come with them and that is how she came to live in Charlotte. Flora's first job after leaving the family she was living with was with the American Red Cross in the first aid and water safety department. While working there, she took training and became a first aid instructor. While working at the Red Cross, Flora's friend, Marjorie Gray and her husband Buck Gray, introduced her to Jon Saunders who later became her husband on December 25, 1952. She later took a job at Hajoca Corporation in the credit department until her son Roger was born in 1960. When Roger was 6 months old, his father retired from Hormel and became a stay-at-home father and Flora went to work for the next 28 years at Standard Chemicals Products which later became Henkel Corporation. Flora worked her way up to Purchasing and Traffic Manager where she supervised a fleet of tank truck and van drivers. After being retired since 1989, these drivers kept in touch with her to the end. While Flora was their supervisor, she felt she needed to understand the driver's work, so she had her senior driver teach her to drive a tank truck which picked up chemicals, which she did and got her chauffer's license. Flora was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, served as President of the Women of the Church and helped to get the funds for building the new church. She and her husband moved to and lived in Medford Acres since 1958. Flora was preceded in death by her husband Jon Saunders in 2014. Flora was a bright and shining light who lifted the spirits of all those who knew her. Her loss will leave a void in their hearts that can never be filled. Flora is survived by her son, Roger Saunders; brother, Dan Greene; sister-in-law, Mary Greene; numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 2:00p.m., Thursday, April 20 in Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Jay Weigel officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to Third Presbyterian Church, 4019 Central Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28205. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral and Cremation Service.
