Evelyn R. Kearney
NORTHFIELD - Evelyn Ruth Kearney died peacefully at Mayo Healthcare in Northfield, Vermont, on Feb. 10, 2017, at the age of 96. Evelyn, the oldest of three children, was born in 1921 in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Lillie and Carl Sandstrom. Her grandparents emigrated from Sweden in the late-1800s and Evelyn grew up speaking Swedish until she went to school. Evelyn shared 64 years of marriage and raised a large family of six children with her husband, Walter, before he passed away in 2010. Walter was a pilot and this allowed them to enjoy visiting many countries. They also enjoyed traveling the back roads of New England and exploring the western United States. In 1988, Evelyn and Walter moved to Chelsea Court Apartments in Chelsea, Vermont, and they made their home there for 20 years. Wherever Evelyn lived, she showed her passion for flower gardens! Evelyn also enjoyed many other interests and activities, including sewing, needlework, holiday decorating, reading, chocolate and cooking. Evelyn's passions and interests have been passed on to her children and grandchildren and she will be fondly remembered for this. Evelyn was a caring person and often volunteered to help others. While at Chelsea Court Apartments, Evelyn would often deliver a homemade meal to someone ill or stop by to check on someone recently returned from the hospital. Evelyn and Walter also helped raise money for Vermont organizations that helped neglected and abused animals. In 2010, Evelyn and Walter were awarded The Governor's Award for Outstanding Community Service. Evelyn is survived by her six children, daughters Alison, Martha, Laura and Kathleen, and sons James and Mark; niece Sandra; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The family is planning a small family memorial in the spring to remember and honor this amazing, tough, caring and interesting woman whom we called Mother.
