WILTON, Conn. - Sister Esther Prendergast, SSND, a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, died on Monday, October 17, 2016, at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, Conn., at age 80. Esther Mary was born on May 30, 1936, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Thomas Prendergast and Esther Kelley Prendergast. Esther was their only child. Esther entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1956, and was professed in 1958. She had begun studying for a degree in French before entering and completed her studies at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, 1959. Her first assignment was to St. Anthony of Padua School, South Ozone Park, N.Y. From 1960 to 2012, Esther's ministries were at high schools in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. She also served as a Counselor and taught Adult Education. During the years 1995-2003, she was a caregiver in her parents' home where she lovingly cared for her mother and then her aunt. Sister Esther retired in 2012 and moved to Villa Notre Dame, Wilton, Connecticut, in 2014 where she gave community service. Sister Prendergast is survived by her aunts Betty Smith of West Roxbury, Mass., and Dorothy Ghika of Beverly, Mass. She is also mourned by cousins, friends and by her community, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. SERVICES: Friends may call at Villa Notre Dame, 345 Belden Hill Road in Wilton, Conn., on Thursday, October 20, from 3-7 p.m., with a Christian wake service at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 21, at 10 a.m., in the Chapel of Villa Notre Dame. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery; Bethel, Conn. Bracken-Donovan-Spodnick Funeral Home of Bridgeport is entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
