Ms. Essie Raye Kincaid
Ms. Essie Raye Kincaid, 93, of Valdese, went to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at her residence, following a period of declining health. Ms. Kincaid was born September 12, 1923 in Burke County, a daughter of the late William Cube Kincaid, Sr. and Essie Johnson Kincaid Forney. She was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, serving as a former member of the Missionary Circle # 1 and the Poor Treasurer Club. She was also a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post # 269 and the Betheum Cookman Club. She was also a former pink lady at Valdese Hospital. Ms. Kincaid had the honor and privilege of serving as the first African American to serve as a Juror in Burke County. She was employed by and considered as family for 63 years with the Albert Garrou family. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, James McKinley Witherspoon, three brothers, William Cube Kincaid Jr., James V. Kincaid and Charlie Forney, and eight sisters, Viola, Wilma, Helen, Nona, Ruby, Nett, Alice and Bert. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jean Jackson of Covington, GA, her sons Edward Lewis Kincaid of Valdese, Dr. Roger Witherspoon and wife Barbara of Collegeville, PA, three sisters, Dorothy Hawkins, Betty Kincaid, and Anne Ramseur and sister-in-law, Margaret Kincaid . Also surviving are seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and seven great great-grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces, cousins and friends. Funeral Services for Essie Raye Kincaid will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday April 29, 2017 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Falls officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Repass will be held following the services at Heritage Middle School. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 4427 Berry School Ave., Valdese, NC 28690 or Burke Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
