Services for Erma Dean Kirkling-Houston, 83 of Tyler, are scheduled for noon Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Greater St. Mary Baptist Church with Dr. M.K. Mast, eulogist. Erma made her heavenly ascent on Sunday, January 8, 2017. Erma was born on June 7, 1933, in Nacogdoches to the parentage of the late Leroy Kirkling and Margaret Moten Kirkling. She graduated from Emmett J. Scott High School in 1951 and continued her education, graduating from Modern Beauty College, Tyler. Erma Dean met the love of her life, Roy Lee Houston, and remained married for more than 64 years. Erma Dean was a self-employed beautician prior to retiring to become a full time grandmother. Early in life, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was a faithful member of Greater St. Mary Baptist Church and remained active until her health failed. She was devoted to her family and friends. A loving person, who enjoyed life and all that life offered, she shared her laughter and excitement with others. Her home and heart were always open to all, and she was "the other mother" to many people. She was preceded in death by daughter, Pamela K. Houston Parks; brother, Leroy Kirkling Jr.; and sisters, Ruth Mildred Campbell and Annie M. Mosley. Profoundly saddened by her passing, yet rejoicing in her life and deeds are a loving and caring husband, Roy Lee Houston Sr; daughter, Jacqueline (Thomas) Monroe, Tyler; son, Roy Lee Houston Jr., Tyler; grandchildren, Christopher B. Houston, Sugar Land, and Shannon Parks, Richardson; sister, Venetia (Frank) Conley, Dallas; five great-grandchildren, Pamela, Jessalyn, Solomon, Donnell and Donnette of Richardson; a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. Public viewing will be 1-7 p.m. Friday at Community Funeral Home, Tyler, and 11 a.m.-noon, Saturday at Greater St. Mary Baptist Church.
