Erika Drewes Owned deli on Castleton Ave., worked at SI Hospital Erika Drewes came to America at the age of six in the spring of 1929. She and her twin brother were born June 7, 1922 in Bermerhaven, Germany. They were the youngest of five children and both died on Nov. 12 (Helmuth in 2000 and Erika in 2017). In 1946 Erika married Ernst Drewes; together they owned and operated a delicatessen on Castleton Avenue. Upon Ernst's death in 1973, Erika sold her deli and went to work at the Staten Island Hospital in medical records, until 1988. Throughout her life she loved baking, sewing and family parties. What Erika cherished most were her family and friends. She had the most contagious personality and laugh that made all who knew her love her dearly. Erika's son Ernst died in 2013. She is survived by children, Richard (Cindy), Nancy (Bruce), and Ernst's wife, Alice; eight grandchildren, Ernie, Mark, Robyn, George, Stephen, Jeffrey, Erika, and Elizabeth; and 15 great-grandchildren.
