Burian, Elissa 91 Jan. 28, 1925 Oct. 12, 2016 Elissa Burian 91, who overcame adversity early in life, passed away Oct. 12, 2016. She escaped the Holocaust from Czecho- slovakia at 13, coming to New York as a refugee. She became a teacher and psychotherapist working with children, especially those who experienced trauma. Elissa helped develop innovative methods published and used internationally. An extraordinary person, she touched and made better the lives of many people, advocating for all regardless of religion, race or sexual orientation. She moved to Oregon in 1990 and helped found Kol Shalom, Community for Humanistic Judaism. Elissa's zest for life inspired her to be a cook, baker, poet; her love of travel took her to six continents. Elissa was predeceased by husband Paul and is survived by sons, Ron and Rick; granddaughters, Amy and Leah; and Talia, her great-granddaughter.
