Elin Marang
Elin Marang was born Elinore Ann Flowers, on August 6, 1927, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, to Edmund Horning Flowers and Ivy Lynn Gossage. Elin graduated from Morgantown High School in Morgantown, W.Va ., in 1945. Elin met her future husband, Donald Edwin Marang at West Virginia University in an Economics class. Elin graduated from West Virginia University in 1949, was married on June 9, 1949 and moved to Florida shortly after the wedding. Don and Elin were married for 65 years and were the parents of Deborah Kay (Vernon) Hartz, Karen Lynn (Jeffrey) Benson, Barbara Sue Marang, and Donald Edwin (Karen) Marang, Jr. Elin became a high school teacher ,teaching Chemistry while in Florida. After the birth of her children, she dropped out of the work force to focus on her family. When her children reached school age, she returned to teaching in the field she studied at WVU, Home Economics. Elin taught Home Economics at Avonworth High School in Ben Avon, Pennsylvania for many years. She had the dubious privilege of teaching Home Ec to all four of her children. The year that Donnie reached high school, the requirements changed so that all boys received a semester of Home Economics. Don, Sr. passed away October 1, 2014 at the age of 90. Elin passed away October 14, 2016 at the age of 89. She is survived by her children, with the exception of her son, Don Marang, Jr. who passed away in 2013. Elin is also survived by her grandchildren: Andrea Barker, Laura (Adam) Bednarek, Lisa (Jake) Knight, David (Erin) Benson, Kimberly (Sam) Nosek, Jonathan Benson, Kevin Marang, Tiffany Marang, and Stephanie Marang; and by her great-grandchildren: Eli and Ellie Benson (twins) and Quynn and Judah Nosek. Elin was preceded in death by her brothers: George Harlan (Lourie) Flowers, Richard Flowers, Ralph Grant (Leola) Flowers, Russell Roland (Martha) Flowers, Roger Flowers, Robert Sterling (Norma) Flowers and by her younger sister, Mary Louise Flowers. She also had an adopted sister, Della Jean (Truman) Bittinger. Elin and Don were active in Methodist congregations until the family moved to Ben Avon Heights, Pennsylvania in the 1960s. At that point, the Marangs joined the Presbyterian Church. Elin's daughter, Barbara, has been serving as a missionary to Choluteca, Honduras for many years, along with Rosemary Nelson. Friends may call on Friday, October 21st at Van Matre Family Funeral Home, 306 Erie Street, Edinboro, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and are invited to the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Pastor Brian Kelly, of McLane Church.
