Eleanor Slonaker POUGHKEEPSIE - Eleanor R. Slonaker, 91 of Poughkeepsie, died at The Pines of Poughkeepsie on Friday, February 3, 2017. Eleanor was born in Troy, NY on July 6, 1925, the daughter of Walter E. and Lillian Renihan. She attended Poughkeepsie schools and was a member of the 1943 Class of Poughkeepsie High School. She graduated with honors from The Krissler Business Institute in 1944. She worked as a secretary for the Bureau of Rights of Way and Claims for the New York State Highway Dept. before joining IBM in 1952 when she was a Senior Secretary for Project HIGH. She retired in September 1955. Eleanor was very active in the community. She volunteered at Vassar Brothers Hospital for over 60 years, beginning as a Candy Striper and served on the Board of Trustees from 1985 to 1993. She was on the boards of trustees of Vassar Brothers Hospital Auxiliary, the Anderson Educational Foundation, the Poughkeepsie Day Nursery and the Hudson Valley Philharmonic Auxiliary. She was a founding member of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic Young Artists Competition, an early member of the Community Mixed Chorus, participated in the development of the Grace Smith House (a shelter for battered women), and a volunteer for the former Neighborhood Service Organization. She was a member and past Deacon of the Reformed Church of Poughkeepsie. On July 16, 1955 she married Robert D. Slonaker in the First Presbyterian Church of Poughkeepsie. Mr. Slonaker predeceased her in 2008. She is survived by her brother, Richard Renihan, her sister-in-law Nancy Ulch, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at The Reformed Church, 70 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie on Sunday, February 26, at 3:00 p.m. There will be no visiting hours.
