ELEANOR HOLDEN BECKER
BECKER, Eleanor Holden Of Westwood, MA, died Oct. 13, 2016. Born in Upland, PA, Sept. 15, 1924 to J. Minshall Holden and Elizabeth C. (Jones) Holden. She graduated from the College of William and Mary, Feb. 1946 and married David K. Gernerd in May, 1946. She married E. Lovell Becker, M.D. in 1972, also having been married to Jack Pontius. She had a long career in fashion publishing, beginning in the Promotion Dept. of Ladies Home Journal, where she rose to Senior Editor. She was Fashion Director at B. Altman and Co., Director of Fashion Publicity at Monsanto Textiles, and Executive Editor of Brides' Magazine in NYC. She was a Guest Lecturer at the Drexel Institute of Technology and Philadelphia Museum of Art, and an Instructor of Creative Fashion Writing at Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC. She was awarded the Best of the Year Award for Art Directing from "Printing Week, Graphic Arts Exhibit" in 1959 and 1962. Mrs. Becker was a member of the NY Fashion Group; Home Fashion League; American Society of Interior Designers; Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority; Meadow Club of Southampton; Southampton Bathing Corp.; River Club, NYC; Garden Club of America; National Society of the Colonial Dames; and a Director at Fox Hill Village, MA. She was a supporter of the Southampton Fresh Air Home. She was also a world traveller to all seven continents. She is survived by her son Frederick H. Gernerd, daughter-in-law Brooks B.
