Eldon E. "Bud" Sheets
Eldon "Bud" E. Sheets, 98, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 at Sacred Heart Nursing Home, Avilla. Born Aug. 23, 1918 in Union Township, he was the son of Evan and Goldie (Walters) Sheets. Bud moved from Whitley County, to New York in 1933, returning in 1945 to Whitley County. He graduated from Marathon Central High School, New York, N.Y., with the Class of 1937, and also proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. On June 22, 1947, he married Betty Ann Herron in Whitley County. Bud worked for Nickel Plate Rail Road, Norwalk Trucking, Scotts Trucking Service and most recently Passages Inc., Columbia City. He was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church, Tri-Lakes Lions Club, Bair Bowling League, American Legion Post 258 in Pierceton, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1892 in Garrett and Teamsters Local 414. Survivors include his children, Buddie E. Sheets, Dewey D. (Annie) Sheets and John G. (Karen) Sheets, all of Columbia City, Harold D. (Blanche) Sheets, of Fort Wayne, Jerry L. (Ann) Sheets, of Pierceton, and Gloria M. (David) Didion, of Garrett; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Raymond Sheets and Keith (Pat) Sheets, both of Warsaw; sisters, Mary Corner, of Columbia City, and Eileen Stewart, of South Whitley; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty A. Sheets in 1989; grandson, David M. Didion; great-grandson, Javon; three brothers; and 12 sisters. Friends may call Monday, Jan. 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City. Funeral services for Bud will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Matthew's Hively Cemetery, Columbia City, with Military Rites rendered by American Legion Post 258, Pierceton.
