In memory of
Elaine McKenney Levis, 88, passed away on February 14, 2017, in Burlington, MA, where she had lived for the past two years. She was born in Boston on May 27, 1928, and was the daughter of the late L. Clayton and Marion (Evans) McKenney. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Charles E. Levis Jr. for 61 years and they were both residents of Belmont, MA, for almost their entire lives. Elaine graduated from Belmont High School in 1945 and from Jackson College (Tufts University) in 1949. She married Chuck on May 19, 1951. Elaine began her teaching career in Belmont in the mid-60s as a long-term substitute teacher. In 1969, she was hired as a full-time English teacher at Belmont Junior High School. Two years after that, she transferred to Belmont High School when the ninth grade was switched from the junior high to the high school. She retired from that position in 1990 after having taught full-time for 21 years. After retiring, she spent winter months at Pine Lakes in North Fort Myers, FL, where she was active in their community chorus and dramatic productions. She enjoyed summers throughout her life on Sebec Lake in Maine. It was at the Payson Park Church young adults group where Elaine met Chuck and some of her closest lifelong friends. She was a devoted and active member of the church for many years. She also acted in several plays and other theatrical productions there, some of which had been written by her father as fund raisers for the church. Elaine had a great love of children, as was evidenced by the jobs she chose to pursue. While in college, she worked summers as a counselor at Med-O-Lark Camp in Maine and upon graduation, she was the field director for the Camp Fire Girls up until her marriage. When her children were young, she served as their room mother at school, as an active participant in the PTA, and as their den leader in Cub Scouts. After her career as a teacher, she volunteered as a teachers aide at Winn Brook Elementary School. She is survived by her three children, Donald and his wife Tobi of Andover, MA; Kenneth of Andover, MA; and Linda Ladd of Lynnfield, MA, and by her eight grandchildren, Keri McDevitt, Kristina Dufault, Gregory Levis, Laura Curren, Sandra Levis, Jessica Ladd, Emily Ladd, and Becky Ladd. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law Bruce N. Levis of Exeter, NH; her sister-in-law J. Lucille Dixon of Sudbury, MA; as well as five nephews and one niece. A service was held at Payson Park Church, 365 Belmont Street, Belmont on Saturday, February 18, at 11am. Relatives and friends were invited. Donations can be made in memory of Elaine M. Levis to Payson Park Church. On line guest book at www.brownandhickey.com
