In memory of
Eileen Baumgarten Benson
Trapasso means passage from this life on earth to a better one. Eileen Irene Benson passed from our sight on Friday, April 14, 2017, in Eau Claire, WI. She was born December 28, 1931 in Chicago, moving to Cicero in childhood and North Riverside, IL during High School. She graduated from Austin High School in Chicago in 1950. After High School she met Bud (B.H.) Benson on a blind date, and they were married on July 17, 1953. They were married 51 years. Eileen and Bud raised two daughters in a home Bud's grandfather had built in the 1850's in Oak Park, IL. They lived there until 1973, when they moved to Glenview, IL, where they resided for over 30 years. In 1974, Eileen returned to school at Oakton Community College where she earned an Associate Degree in Accounting. She worked full and part time as a bookkeeper until the age of 75. Eileen LOVED to dance, and in her 50's she began tap dancing again with a Senior Tap Dancing Program. She danced with the group for over a decade, performing with the group in shows in the greater Chicago area, including several solo performances. The friends she made at "TNT" dance group were very special friends. In addition to raising her family, Eileen was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America, and was co-founder of the only adult Girl Scout Troop in the United States. Some of those women remain cherished life-long friends. She also was a member of Questers International, and a volunteer at Glenview (IL) Community Church, where she was a member for over 25 years. After Bud's death, Eileen moved to The Moorings in Arlington Heights, where she had a wonderful community of friends and greatly enjoyed her retirement. In 2013, due to health and vision problems, she moved to Heatherwood Assisted Living in Eau Claire where she made even more new friends. Eileen made friends wherever she went, and one of her strengths was her positivity, even in the face of serious health issues. Eileen is survived by two daughters Eileen (Dr. Steven) Immerman, Eau Claire, WI and Kathleen Benson of Madison, WI. She is further survived by four wonderful grandchildren, Alison Knauer (Carrie McLeod) of Tacoma, WA, Douglas Immerman (Jessica) of Gig Harbor, WA, Andrew Immerman of Denver, CO and Matthew Immerman (Samantha LaNou) of New Hope, MN. Eileen was thrilled to be a great-grandmother "G-Ma" to Caleb, Lila and Natalie Immerman. She is also survived by cousins Lois Green (FL), Shirley Wade (CO), along with other cousins and friends, including her life-long best friend Virginia Blank. The family requests no flowers, but Memorials can be made to the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana - Attention: Fund Development, 20 South Clark, Suite 200, Chicago, IL 60603 Or Glenview Community Church 1000 Elm St. Glenview, Illinois 60025.
