Edward Carl SOBCZAK
SOBCZAK Edward Carl 9/24/1924 - 10/5/2016 Edward passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, surrounded by his loving family and dear friends at Mary's Woods, Lake Oswego, Oregon, where he resided for the past 16 years. Ed was 92 years of age. Born to Joseph and Clara Sobczak, Ed was raised in the Kuhschwantz Polish neighborhood, where he met the love of his life, Evelyn Dutkiewicz, who lived just two streets away. After serving his country during WWII in the United States Navy as a Motor Machinist Mate 3rd Class in the British Isles and Tunisia, North Africa, Ed returned to Toledo to ask for Evelyn's hand in marriage. Their union in June 1947 was blessed with four loving children. Ed left his factory job at Lynch Corporation after the war to pursue a career that spanned 34 years as a Toledo Police Officer. Graduating from the 7th Toledo Police Academy class in 1948, Ed rose through the ranks serving as a patrolman, detective sergeant (1957), lieutenant (1965), and captain (1970). Ed was an instructor at the old Toledo Police Academy on Spielbusch Avenue. An accomplished marksman with his service revolver, Ed won the 4th Annual National Combat Match Championship for police officers in 1957. He attended the FBI National Academy in 1970, and acquired the tools for modern policing techniques which he employed to train many officers who went on to distinguished careers in law enforcement including D. Michael Collins and John Tharp. Later in his career, Ed served as the head of the Community Relations section, helping to keep Toledo safe during a time of national civil unrest. Ed's commitment to community policing was his driving force until his retirement in 1982. Ed graduated St. Stanislaus Parochial School (1938), Scott High School (1942), and earned an associate's degree in Public Service Technology at The University of Toledo (1972). Ed had a great love for music, playing the trumpet in the Polish Falcons band and singing in the St. Stanislaus and Gesu Church choirs. After moving to Oregon with his wife, Ed stayed active bowling two times a week in Wilsonville, until the age of 89. At Mary's Woods, Ed was involved in plays, musicals, cribbage, and committee leadership. His faith was very strong and he served as a Eucharistic Minister and attended mass daily. Ed's life was immensely enriched by his many friends and the staff at Mary's Woods, especially his daily pinochle card games with his friends including Mary Neely, Bill Waters and his favorite card partner, Sr. Marilyn Harris. He is survived by his four children, Margaret Smith, Tigard, Oregon, and Bob Smith, Wilsonville, Oregon; Paul (Fono) Sobczak, University Place, Washington; Mark (Deb) Sobczak, Toledo, Ohio; and Jane (Thomas) Whelan, Dobbs Ferry, New York; along with seven grandchildren, Grant, Graham, Laina, Eddie, James, Cori and Arthur.
