Dr. Edward Long Jr.
Dr. Edward Long, Jr., 76, of St. Petersburg, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017. He was affectionately known as "Tiny", "Ed", "PaPa", and "Uncle Tiny". Ed was born in Jacksonville, FL, on August 5, 1940 to the late Edward Joseph Long, Sr. and Mary Louise Forester Long. He graduated from Columbia High School in Lake City, FL, a proud member of the Class of '58, where he excelled as an athlete and lettered in four sports. Ed attended the University of Georgia on an athletic scholarship where he played baseball and basketball. Later, he transferred to the University of Florida, earning his Bachelor's degree and Master's Degree. Ed later received his Doctorate from Nova University. He proudly served his country in Germany as a United States Army artillery 1st Lieutenant, and as a member of the European championship baseball team. Ed was a true southern gentleman, and he never met a stranger. He enjoyed telling stories about his memories of friends, classmates, students, coworkers, and the young men he coached in little league baseball. He was a leader, mentor, and friend to so many, always interested in the lives of others. He was employed in 1966 as an instructor at St. Petersburg Junior College, where he enjoyed a successful career for 38 years. He held many roles, among them SPJCs first full-time Athletic Director, Academic Dean of Students, Associate Vice-President, and Assistant to the president. Ed is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, Pasadena Community Church, and is a Kentucky Colonel. He formerly served the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, PAL, Leadership St. Petersburg Alumni Board of Directors, Pasadena Presbyterian church elder, and many youth organizations. He was an Eagle Scout, was recognized as a Sunshine Ambassador by the City of St. Petersburg, and he was inducted in the FCCAA Hall of Fame in 1999. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren. His hobbies included sports, fishing, hunting, attending Florida Gators football games, and taking many memorable trips with friends. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Andrea Powers Long; children, Edward Joseph Long III (Marnie), Lauren L. Hart (Jonathan); grandchildren, Tyler E. Long, Anslee J. Long, Madison L. Hart, Mason C. Hart; brother, Grady Forester Long (Sammye); nieces, Marianne Siegel (David), Stefanie Starnes (William); brother in law Douglas Alex Powers; and many extended family members and friends. The family will receive friends for a gathering on Thursday, April, 20 from 5pm-7pm at Anderson McQueen Family Tribute Center, 2201 Dr. MLK Street North, St. Petersburg, Florida 33704. All are welcome to attend the interment which will be held at Bay Pines National Cemetery with full military honors on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 10:00am. Following the ceremony, a reception will be held at Pasadena Community Church, Hamilton Hall, from 11:00 until 12:30, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 1:00 pm in the main sanctuary.
