Edward O. Helwig Boy Scouts executive and Navy veteran, of Cedar Grove Edward O. Helwig, 95, of Cedar Grove, N.J., passed away Jan. 12, 2017. Services will be Monday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m. at Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove. Entombment will following at Restland Memorial Park, East Hanover, N.J. Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memories and condolences may be shared at shookscedargrove.com . Born in Tonawanda, N.Y. to the late Edward and Mary, Edward graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1943. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He married Annette in 1949, and they lived in Jamestown, N.Y., and Wantagh, N.Y., before settling in Cedar Grove in 1964. He was a scout executive with the Boy Scouts of America, retiring in 1983. He then worked in special education in public schools, retiring in 1993. He was a member of various boards at First United Methodist Church, Montclair, N.J. and was a member of the Cedar Grove VFW Post 6255. Predeceased by his parents and sisters, Winifred Fischer and Lois Wands, he is survived by his wife, Annette (Cox); children, Lyn Hoffman (Richard) and Keith Helwig, and grandchildren, Eric and Christopher Helwig, Amanda Cebula, and Jeremy Hoffman.
