Dwight L. Allen
Dwight L. Allen Age: 95 • Burlington Dwight L. Allen passed away, in peace, on October 17, 2016, at the age of 95. Dwight was born in Lucas, Iowa on August 11, 1921 to Edwin & Vera (Cunningham) Allen. He was raised on the family farm and lived through the Great Depression. Dwight joined the Marines during World War II and served his country in battle, at Guadalcanal. Upon his return to the States, he was assigned to duty at Hingham, MA where he met and married Lillian Van Der Zee. A family was soon to follow. In 1955, the Allens moved to Montpelier, and, in 1969, to Burlington. Dwight remained in Burlington until 2016 and spent five great years at Cathedral Square Assisted Living, before moving to Baptist Health Nursing Home in Scotia, NY. Dwight worked in the plumbing and heating business, with a long career at Sondik of Vermont, until his retirement. He enjoyed woodworking and the company of friends and family. He had a strong work ethic and moral character. He was active in church affairs and was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge in Montpelier, and the North Avenue Alliance Church in Burlington. Dwight was predeceased by Lillian in 2006. He leaves his children: Donald (Katherine) Allen; Pat (Peter) Sadler; Richard (Betty) Allen; Robert (Francine) Allen and Stephen (Anita) Allen; grand-children: Sherry Libby, Debbie Lapan, Karen Allen, Melissa Allen, David Allen and Daniel Allen; and a flock of great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister Shirley Mills and brother Roger Allen. A memorial service will be held at The White Funeral Home, 264 N. Ballston Avenue, Scotia, NY, on October 22, 2016, at 11:00, with interment following at a future date at Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington, Vermont. Condolences may be shared at www.sbfuneralhome.com .
