Douglas Edwin McCauley
Douglas Edwin McCauley Grimes Douglas Edwin McCauley, 58, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after experiencing a medical emergency in the line of duty. Doug was born October 30th, 1958 in Des Moines to Larry and Shirley McCauley. Doug grew up in Carlisle and went to U of IA and DMACC and worked at Pepsi before he became a fireman in October 1987, serving the community for 29 years. His sons Ryan and Cole were the light of his life and he was involved in all of their school activities, coaching little league baseball and basketball, and helping with the swim team. He enjoyed spending all the time he could with them. The firefighters have said there wasn't a conversation that went by without Doug mentioning how proud he was of his two boys. Doug also owned and operated a siding and windows business with his father, Larry, for more than 30 years. Doug enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his place in the Ozarks, and most recently in Hawaii with Deb McCauley. Doug is survived by his father, Larry McCauley, two sons, Ryan (Brooke) and Cole (Kelli and grandson Hayes), sons of Corinne Nelson, sisters Debbie Peterson (Greg) and Denise McCauley, former wife Deb McCauley, nephews Jeff (Angie), Alex (Melissa), Evan, Ann (Joe), Sam, as well as many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley McCauley, his cousin, Bruce Jennings, and his grandparents, Harry and Maxine Jennings and Virgil and Mildred McCauley. A memorial visitation will be held from 4-8 PM, Wednesday, February 15th, 2017 at Merle Hay Funeral Home in Des Moines. His memorial service will be held Thursday, February 16th, 2017 at 1 PM at Des Moines First Assembly Church, followed by a reception at the Des Moines Police Officer's Hall in Pleasant Hill. His ashes will be buried in a private ceremony at Carlisle Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be given to a memorial fund to be donated to Saydel Little League and Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Iowa. Donations can be mailed to Des Moines Fire Department Credit Union, 1330 Mulberry St., Des Moines, IA 50309 or Des Moines Police Officers Credit Union, 423 E. Court Ave., Des Moines, IA 50309. Ryan and Cole and their families would like to thank their many friends, the community, The Des Moines Firefighters, and The Des Moines Police Department for their outpouring of amazing support during this extremely difficult time.
