DOROTHY R. O'BRIEN (nee SULLIVAN) November 26, 1930 February 15, 2017 Dorothy Rose O'Brien, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died peacefully with her family at her side on February 15, 2017 at the age of 86. Born in Gary on November 26, 1930, to Daniel and Ellen (Kissane) Sullivan. Dorothy was the youngest of five children. After graduating from Emerson High School in 1949, Dorothy was employed by US Steel in Gary. She was married to James M. O'Brien in January 1952 and they were together for 47 years before Jim's passing in June 1999. Dorothy was a member of The Mothers of Twins Club and a devoted member of St. Mary's Parish in Crown Point. She was also a Pink Lady with the Auxiliary at St. Anthony's Hospital. An avid Bridge and Pinochle player, Dorothy was with the same group of friends for over 25 years. She loved to bake, travel, sit on her back porch and visit with family and friends, and to share her fondness for all things Irish. In 1997, she and her daughters travelled to meet her extended family in County Kerry, Ireland. Dorothy never lost the twinkle in her eyes. Dorothy is survived by her loving children Karen O'Brien-Bynum of Crown Point; Sharon O'Brien of Chicago; Jim (Sandi) O'Brien of Valparaiso and their four children Conor (Anna), Collin, Corinne and Christian; Janet (Rich) Warns and their two children Grace and John, of Carmel, IN; John (Carol) O'Brien of Chesterton; Bridget (Brian) Pendrak and their two children William and Ellen, of Bettendorf, Iowa. She is also survived by sister-in-law Patty Sullivan of Seattle, Washington; and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jim; son-in-law Kevin Bynum; sisters Josephine (Dolly) Hannon; Mary Ellen O'Brien; Margaret Kinder, and brother John (Curly) Sullivan. Friends may visit with Dorothy's family on Sunday, February 19, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home , 10101 Broadway, Crown Point. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. DIRECTLY at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 405 East Joliet St., Crown Point, with Father Paul Novak officiating. Interment Calavary Cemetery, Portage. A special thank you to Journey Senior Living and Harbor Lights Hospice of Merrillville.
