In memory of
Dorothy Hogan Joyce
Dorothy Hogan Joyce, 86, entered eternal peace on Oct. 14, 2016. Born in Scranton, Pa., she was the daughter of Helen Dunn Hogan and John Hogan. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, John Joyce, who passed away on Oct. 19, 1999. Dorothy dedicated her life to being a homemaker and a caretaker. She provided excellent care of her mother and husband during lengthy illnesses. She took great pride in her home and her family. She was a great story-teller and never forgot a memory. She adored her grandchildren. They were the apple of her eye, and she lived to vicariously experience their joys and accomplishments in life. She was a good friend to all. She loved unexpected company at her door, fashion, hair styling, parties and the lost art of a good conversation. The important things in life to her were having a good family dinner and sitting around the table enjoying each other's company. She enjoyed the little things such as a ride around her old neighborhood, reminiscing about the past, boasting about her Irish heritage, cooking, helping others, decorating and shopping. She had a kind and compassionate soul. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. The family would like to thank the nurses, occupational and physical therapists and the maintenance staff of the Scranton Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for providing such a caring and compassionate temporary home for Dorothy during her illness, along with the excellent emergency and critical care given by Geisinger Community Medical Center and Jacqueline Dionne, her niece and godchild, for her constant concern and medical guidance through this difficult time. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Maureen Murtha and son-in-law, who was the son she never had, Jim Murtha; and grandchildren, Meghan and James Murtha. She is also survived by her sisters, Kay Judge, Scranton; and Marion Rasieleski, Scranton; in addition to nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Jean Warburton, Forestville, Calif.; Helen Sparrow, Butler, N.J.; and Joan Hogan, Scranton, Pa.; and one brother, John Hogan, Tunkhannock, Pa. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Ave., Scranton. All attending the Mass are asked to go directly to the church. Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Vanston and James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash St., Scranton. Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.
