In memory of
Doris Jones
Doris Jones, born Doris Marie Payne, passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 5, 2016, surrounded by family in her home in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. She was 80. Doris was born in Hazel Green, Alabama on November 26, 1935. As the eldest of ten sisters, she was a teacher, caretaker and friend. She always believed in family first. Today these strong women are known as "the sisters" and their unbreakable bond is the kind that transcends a lifetime. When Doris was 16, she met the love of her life. John Richard "Dick" Jones walked into an ice cream parlor where Doris worked as a soda jerk. He ordered a shake that day to get her attention, and another one every day over the course of several weeks just to speak with her. It wasn't until he confessed that couldn't possibly drink another shake that she realized he was only there to see her. Their love story was the beautiful kind that we all hope to live. They married shortly after meeting, her in a blue dress and him in a jacket, just the two of them under the Mississippi sky. Together they raised three children, Colette, Kerry and Ted before finally settling in Fort Walton Beach, FL. They were happily married for 44 years, when Dick passed away March 9, 1997. Dick saw what everyone who came to know Doris saw. To know her was to love her. She was beautiful, even in her last moments. She was intelligent and never afraid to speak her mind. She was loving and unconditionally cared for those around her. She was honest when you needed to hear the truth. She was resilient in every obstacle she faced and above all, she was fearless. Those who survive her will miss Doris every day.
