Doris Ellen Gillette (Leak) of Tawas City, formerly of Mt. Pleasant and Traverse City, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, age 101 years. Doris was born on June 24, 1915 in Charlotte to James E. and Verda M. Leak. After her high school graduation, Doris attended beauty school where she studied and earned her certificates as a licensed beautician. She and her sister, Dorothy Morgan, worked as Beauticians together for 10 years. Doris married her sweetheart, Howard B. Gillette, on July 15, 1940 in Lansing. They celebrated nearly 63 years of marriage before Howard passed away on July 12, 2003. Doris was a very active woman who truly enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, knitting, and most of all baking and trying new recipes. She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Lee Lockman of Tawas City; two grandchildren, Rob Lockman of Tawas City and Jim (Lisa) Lockman of Lexington, Ky.; three great grandchildren, Jacob Howard Lockman, Benjamin Tansey Lockman and Emma Lockman; and two nieces, Francee Wirt and Marcia Gibson. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Gillette; sister, Dorothy M. Morgan; sister-in-law, Beth Maters; and a nephew, David Maters. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place and she will be laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery in East Tawas.
