Doreen was born in Victoria, British Columbia, to George and Emily (Hick) Boyd. They moved to Port Angeles in 1923. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1937, she taught piano, while continuing her own lessons with Paul Pierre McNeely, an eminent pianist, composer and teacher in Seattle for two years. She married Henry Grimmonpre' in 1943 and moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1946. They had one daughter, Mary. They later divorced. Doreen continued teaching piano in Portland for many years and was active in the Progressive Music Teachers Association of Portland. She returned to Port Angeles in 1966 and resumed her teaching career. She married Virgil Nielson in June 1973. They enjoyed frequent card games with friends. Virgil passed away in April 2002. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and a charter member of Monday Musicale. Doreen was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Nielson, brother, John Wilfred Boyd, and stepdaughter, Sharron Hamilton She is survived by her daughter, Mary Black of Port Angeles; stepdaughter Cheryl Nielson of Olympia; two grandchildren, Vanessa Black of Port Angeles, and Lea (John) Scott of Bellingham; seven great-grandchildren, David Jr., Chevy, Justice, James, Paris, Iziah and Crayton; and two great-great-grandchildren, Major and Hunter. Services will be held Friday, January 13 for family and friends. There will be a viewing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Harper Ridgeview Funeral Chaple, then graveside service at 2 p.m. at Mt Angeles Cemetery with a reception and potluck following at 519 S. H St., Port Angeles. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church or Hospice of Clallam County.
