His family eventually moved to 208 College Street. Don's grade school years were spent at the school on the corner of Baird and Washington Streets. He attended high school at the Union School located on College Street. During Don's high school years, he worked for P.A. Wright & Sons Hardware. He saw action in the Pacific and in the Battle of Okinawa. When he returned home from the Navy, Don and his mother Edna co-operated Winglemire Furniture. In 1948, Don married Hazel Williams of Holly in Angola, Indiana. They built a new home on Bevins Lake property in 1952, where Hazel passed in 2007 and Don resided until his death. Don always loved Holly and called it his home. During Don's younger years, he continued to dabble in photography and processed his photos in a dark room in his basement. Don enjoyed scuba diving and belonged to the Michigan Skin Diving Council and the Holly Skin Diver's Club. He also loved hunting and fishing, especially at his cabin in Sidnaw. Don and some of his buddies formed a bowling team that Winglemire Furniture sponsored, and they were champions for many years. Don loved gardening and even had a greenhouse built next his home.
