Winglemire, Donald Age 91, of Holly, died Wed. Jan. 11, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tues. Jan. 17, 2016 at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Holly. Visitation will be from 2-9 PM Sun. and Mon. He was born November 20,1925 to Maurice Winglemire and Edna Burkhardt Winglemire in the village of Holly in a house (now known as Joseph's Oak Shop) across the street from the present Winglemire Furniture, in the back room by the pot belly stove. His family eventually moved to 208 College Street. Don's grade school years were spent at the school on the corner of Baird and Washington Streets. He attended high school at the Union School located on College Street. During Don's high school years, he worked for P.A. Wright & Sons Hardware. Don's father Maurice died in 1943 just before Don graduated from high school. Don was drafted into the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving on a light cruiser, the USS Atlanta. He saw action in the Pacific and in the Battle of Okinawa. His rank was PhoMC2, a photographer mate, and he took photographs of the Nagasaki devastation and many other significant events during his Navy career. When he returned home from the Navy, Don and his mother Edna co-operated Winglemire Furniture. In 1948, Don married Hazel Williams of Holly in Angola, Indiana. They built a new home on Bevins Lake property in 1952, where Hazel passed in 2007 and Don resided until his death. Don always loved Holly and called it his home. He implemented the revitalization of downtown Holly in 1986 and worked many long hours to make Holly a better place for its businesses and residents. Don was a member of the Holly Village Council for 26 years, served on the Downtown Development Authority, served on the Holly Township Board of Trustees, and was the Township Zoning Board Chairman for 20 years; he also served on the Holly Park Authority, the Holly Veterans Memorial Association, Holly Kiwanis Club, Holly American Legion, Holly Royal order of the Moose, Holly Veterans of Foreign Wars, Holly Masons Lodge, Holly Chamber of Commerce, Holly Historical Commission, Holly Community Fund, Military Order of the Cootie, and Boys Scouts, where he achieved Eagle Scout status. Don was certified as an Interior Designer, belonged to the Michigan Retailer's Association, was a Holly Retail Merchant for seventy years, and was president of Winglemire Furnitre, Joseph's Oak Shop, and Holly Gas Company. During Don's younger years, he continued to dabble in photography and processed his photos in a dark room in his basement. Don enjoyed scuba diving and belonged to the Michigan Skin Diving Council and the Holly Skin Diver's Club. He also loved hunting and fishing, especially at his cabin in Sidnaw. Don and some of his buddies formed a bowling team that Winglemire Furniture sponsored, and they were champions for many years. Don loved gardening and even had a greenhouse built next his home. He cultivated beautiful geraniums and rows and rows of roses. Don had a plethora of collections, from antique toys to historical data on Holly. Don is survived by his children Lynn (Rick) Duberville, John (Audrey) Winglemire, Penny (Lorne) Raupp, and Richard (Jill) Winglemire; his grandchildren, Ryan (Crystal) Near, Dwayne (Katie) Raupp, Maurice (Emily) Raupp, Joseph Winglemire, Anna Winglemire, Alyssa (Jarem) Savage, and Jacob Winglemire; and his great-grandchildren Maddox and Hudson Near, Mira Belle Raupp, and McKenzie Savage.He was preceded in death by his sister Barbara Keener. Don's children currently live in Holly and work in the family businesses. Special thanks go to Grace Hospice and Lindsay Brabon.
