In memory of
Donald M. Schmit
Donald M. Schmit, age 82, of Dubuque, Iowa, was called home peacefully at 4:09 p.m., on Monday, October 17, 2016, at home. To celebrate Don's life, family and friends may visit from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at Behr Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Don was born on March 9, 1934, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Michael and Jeanette "Chick" (Franzen) Schmit. Don honorably served his country for 6 years with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Don took great pride in his strong work ethic and was proud of the 25 years he invested his time and talents at Georgia Pacific. Family was a continual priority to Don and he generously cared for both of his parents during their later years in life. In his free time, Don always found his greatest joy in a little socializing with those around him; whether a neighborhood friend, or child, looking for some pleasant conversation, or simply relaxing on a stool with his friends at the Grand Tap. He was also well known for his love of walking everywhere, and anywhere, as he never actually owned a car and was perfectly content to live out his days in such a manner. Don has left us suddenly and we mourn his swift absence, but we know that he is now reunited with his heavenly family and we thank God for the 82 years He shared Don with us. Those left to cherish Don's memory include his brother, Charles "Chuck" (Lil) Schmit, Galena, IL; a sister-in-law, Geneva Schmit, Dubuque, IA; and several nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert O. "Bob" Schmit Sr. A Donald M. Schmit memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities. ...
