On Sunday, October 9, 2016, Dr. “Skip” Ruth, 81, died at home surrounded by his loving family. He waged a valiant battle against both Renal and Prostate cancers for over 10 years. Dr. Ruth was predeceased by his parents, Henry Bergey Ruth and Helen Keller Ruth -Lansdale PA. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Stein Ruth; children: April Ruth Diaz (David) -Beaver PA, Laura Ruth Donall (William) -Aberdeen MD, Donald Henry Ruth, II, MD (Laura Peter, MD) -Eleva WI; grandchildren Daniel, Benjamin and Caleb Diaz, Emily, Megan and Isabel Ruth; maternal aunt Stella Keller Godshall -Lansdale PA; siblings Patricia Ruth Periolat (John) -Charlottesville VA, John D Ruth (Nanette) -Telford PA, Anne Ruth Landes (John) -Knoxville TN, MaryAnn Ruth Doheny (Francis “Corky”) -Radnor PA; in-laws Charlotte & James Fritz -Whitehall PA, Carol & Lewis “Bud” Shoemaker -San Antonio TX, Joyce Stein -Ulster PA, Gustav & Annette Stein -Kutztown PA, Maria & Victor Hudak -Bratislava, Slovakia; numerous cousins, nearly 30 nieces and nephews; as well as his exchange student “sons” Per Houge from Norway and Michael Heuer from Switzerland. Dr. Ruth graduated from Lansdale High School -Lansdale PA, from Ursinus College -Collegeville PA, from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine -Philadelphia PA, was an Intern at the Allentown General Hospital (PA) where he met and married the love of his life Ethel Stein. He joined the US Navy and trained at the School of Aviation Medicine -Pensicola FL, where he soloed in Flight School and received his wings being designated a Flight Surgeon and served for 3 years at Naval Air Stations in Midway Island HI and Willow Grove PA. After leaving the Navy, he had a private medical practice in his home -Souderton PA for 10 years with the last four years being in joint practice with Dr Gordon Lupin -Hatfield PA. He was on faculty at the Family Practice Residency Program of E.W. Sparrow Hospital -Lansing MI and its branch office -Mason MI; was Director of Family Practice Residency Program of Deaconness Hospital -Buffalo NY; was Founder and Director of the Family Practice Residency Program at The Medical Center -Beaver Falls PA; to accomplish his life-long dream of an office with computerized medical records, billing and appointments he opened a private practice in Midland PA, and worked in Occupational Medicine and locum tenens work until he retired. Dr. Ruth was honored by the Pennsylvania Medical Society for 50 years as a Family Practice physician, was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the North Penn Alumni Athletic Association for his accomplishments in Track and Field events from high school, was a musician and lover of music throughout his life and, after moving to MD, actively supported the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra by serving on the Board of Directors. Memorial Service will be Saturday, November 19th at 1 pm at Grace United Methodist Church -Aberdeen, MD.
