ST. PARIS - Donald S. "Smitty" Purk, age 71, of Piqua and formerly of Saint Paris, passed away at 5:18 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2016 in Miami County Hospice Unit, Troy. Born on June 29, 1944 in Piqua, Smitty was a son of the late Donald L. and Mildred J. (Sale) Purk. He is survived by a son, Donald Purk, two granddaughters, a sister, Janice Parthemore, all of Saint Paris, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family members, the Caudills, the Davises, the Thomases, the Newmans and many other friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Jeremy, a sister, Sharon Huffman, and a brother, Dwight "Butch" Purk. Smitty was a 1963 graduate of Graham High School. He served his country in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam Era and received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal with a Purple Heart, and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal. He retired in 1996 from Navistar in Springfield. Smitty will be remembered for the love and support he gave to his family. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at noon in the ATKINS-SHIVELY FUNERAL HOME, 216 S. Springfield Street, Saint Paris, Ohio with Reverend Ken McDonald presiding. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, W. Troy Street, Saint Paris. There will be two hours of visitation prior to the funeral service beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home.
