Donald M. Milbury
Donald Melcher Milbury 80, died pea- cefully on February 13, 2017. Donald will be remembered as a man with a giant heart who connected deeply with other people. Born on July 4, 1936 in Beverly, MA and raised in Hampton Falls, NH, Don was the middle child in seven of Arthur Rupert and Elinor Frances Hawes Milbury. Donald was a 1954 graduate of Hampton Academy and served for two years in the United States Army, stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked as a customer service representative at the Shawmut Bank in Boston for thirty-seven years. Don also worked a second job, and his two week vacation would often consist of taking off from the first job to work full-time at the second. A man of unbounded energy and unwavering devotion, Don also cared tirelessly for his wife of forty-two years, Mertie Sarah Raynes Milbury, steadily supporting her through a long illness and setting a clear example for his two children Carol and Richard. Don also spent many hours volunteering and pursuing his hobbies of gardening and old-fashioned New England cooking; almost all who met him remember a special food that he shared with them. Much of Dons culinary talent went towards supporting the Unitarian Universalist Church. Don joined the First Congregational Society Unitarian Universalist New Hampshire as a child. He served as moderator of this church for fifty years from 1960 until 2010, inviting and organizing guest ministers and musicians and raising money for its historic preservation with a yearly bake sale. Don was also an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lynn for forty years and was famed there for his great generosity and his chili recipe. After thirty-seven years of service, Don retired from the Shawmut Bank in 1994 and worked equally hard at two part time jobs as a health care aide and cashier. This second act was cut short in 1999 when he suffered a massive stroke, which paralyzed the left side of his body. Don did not let this injury slow him down and instead used his newfound free time to modify his cookware so that he could continue to churn out his signature Hummingbird cake. Don is survived by his daughter, Carol Milbury Dub (Colm Regan) of Brookline, MA and his son Richard Frederick Milbury (Ilana Krepchin) of Somerville, MA, sisters Barbara Waldron (John) of Ashford, CT, Carol Milbury of Newmarket, NH, Elinor Bailey (Harold) of Hyde Park, VT, Gayle Szydlo (Steve,) brother Frank Milbury (Kathleen) of Ashford, CT, sister in law, Mary Milbury of Aurora, UT, grandchildren Molly Milbury of Somerville, MA and Olivia Dub, Rex Dub, and Ciarn Regan of Brookline, MA, and numerous nieces and nep- hews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mertie Sarah Raynes Milbury, his brother Allen Wendell Milbury, his brother-in-law John Waldron, and his son-in-law Mark Richard Dub. A memorial service will be held on June 3, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Society Unitarian Universalist, 143 Exeter Road, Hampton Falls, NH. All are welcome and encouraged to attend and celebrate Dons life in this special place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Dons name to the First Congregational Society Unitarian Universalist, 143 Exeter Road, Hampton Falls, NH or to Ferry Beach Retreat and Conference Center, 5 Morris Avenue, Saco, Maine 04072.
