Donald C. Johnston
Donald C. Johnston, 86, of Greensburg, formerly of Washington and Peters Township, died Saturday, April 15, 2017, in Redstone Highlands, Greensburg. He was born June 18, 1930, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Thomas R. H. Johnston and Sarah E. "Sadie" McCorkle Johnston. Mr. Johnston obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees from California University of Pennsylvania, formerly California State Teachers College. He was a wood shop and industrial technology teacher in Peters Township for more than 30 years. After retiring from teaching, he worked at Miller Hardware in Peters Township for several years. The Johnstons made their home in Peters Township for 42 years. In 2000, they moved to Presbyterian SeniorCare's Village Court in Washington. Mr. Johnston enjoyed his family, being a teacher, his students, Scottish Highland games, camping, traveling, going on cruises, boating with his outboard boat and, in his last years, watching the squirrels, chipmunks and birds that visited the feeder outside his window. On June 18, 1954, in Bentleyville, he married J. June Weir, who died February 12, 2011. Surviving are four children, Cindy (Mark) Rowe of New Derry, Mark (Terri) Johnston of Monessen, Bruce (Linda) Johnston of Verona and Diane Fuller of Centre Hall; two granddaughters, Cheryl (Matt) Kohler of Blairsville and Rachel Fuller of Centre Hall; and his girlfriend of six years, Lillian Dentel of Washington. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Hummell and Jones Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, with the Rev. Kelley Schanely officiating. Private interment will be in Bethel Church Cemetery.
