Donald Allen "Hoppy" Hopkins Sr.
Donald Allen "Hoppy" Hopkins Sr., 78, of Burnside, died on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, at Indiana Regional Medical Center. The son of Robert E. Hopkins Sr. and Edith C. (Pennington) Hopkins Beam, he was born on May 30, 1938, in Commodore. Don was a member of the Purchase Line High School Class of 1956. For more than 50 years, he had worked as a construction superintendent in the field of road construction. Currently, he was the mayor of Burnside Borough, a position he had served for more than 30 years. Active in his community, he was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, the Walston Club and the Glen Campbell GI Club. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was the president of Hoppy's Savage Inn, his family's hunting camp. Two of his favorite hobbies were being a ferrier and riding on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. In recent years, there were many days of the week at places throughout the area that you could find him pursuing his passion for karaoke. Don even carried his own "little black book" full of the listing of his favorite karaoke songs, which he would sing alone and with his grandsons. On March 10, 1961, Don married the late Helen L. (Armstrong) Hopkins, with whom he shared 44 years of marriage. He is survived by two children, Daniel G. Hopkins and wife Bobbie of Commodore and Vicki Lynn Hopkins of Missouri; six grandchildren, Carmen Conner and husband Brad, Joshua Hopkins and wife Jill, D.J. Hopkins and wife Kayla, Niki Misko and husband Paul, Robert Hopkins and Samantha Turner and husband Andy; 14 great-grandchildren, LaighLa, Jianna, Laikan, Jemma, Vayda, Jesiah, Jade, Sophia, Lydia, Emery, Talon, Slate, Tristan and Parker; and a brother, James Hopkins of Burnside. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen, on Oct. 16, 2005; two sons, Donald A. Hopkins Jr., on Dec. 25, 2014, and Dale T. Hopkins, on Nov. 14, 1990; four brothers, William, Richard, Robert Jr. and Harry Hopkins; and five sisters, Isabelle Morgan, Edith Delilio, Lucy King, Jean Pearce and infant Elizabeth Ann Hopkins. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, where an 11 a.m. funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, with Pastor Chris Massey officiating. Interment will follow in the Burnside Cemetery.
