Donald M. Cerny
Donald "Fuzz" M. Cerny, 92, of Austin, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health System, Austin. Donald Manferd Cerny was born Sept. 13, 1924, in Austin, the son of Frank and Dorothy (Harr) Cerny. Donald attended school in Austin, leaving early to join the United States Navy in November of 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater for 18 months as an Aviation Metalsmith. He was discharged in 1947 and returned to Austin to attend the sheet metal journeyman's program. On June 20, 1952, Donald married Arliss Anderson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield. After completing his journeyman program, he worked for several area businesses, including Austin Heating and Scheid Plumbing and Heating. Donald was proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with his family. He also had an interest in the stock market and could be found watching business programs on the television. Donald was extremely proud to have been a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union for almost 70 years. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of VFW Post 1216 and also belonged to American Legion Post 91. Survivors include his wife, Arliss Cerny, of Austin; five children, Lynne (Tom) Hansen, of Wells, Diane (Ken) Wangen, of Albert Lea, Marsha (Don) Leathers, of Austin, David (Debbie) Cerny, of Madelia, and Paul Cerny, of Austin; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bonnie Tolzmann. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan 17, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Austin with Intern Pastor Erin Coutts officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, at Worlein Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with Military Honors by VFW Post 1216 and American Legion Post 91. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com .
