Dolores V. Kohut McGraw R.N.
Dolores V. Kohut McGraw, R.N., of Carbondale, the mother of nine children, died Friday at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 88 years old. She was the widow of attorney Joseph T. McGraw, the attorney who created the Lackawanna County Public Defenders office. Born in Vandling, daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Tobias Kohut, Mrs. McGraw was a proud graduate of Vandling High School and the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, Carbondale, where she earned her R.N. in 1949. She was employed at Clarks Summit State Hospital for 33 years, serving 25 years of that time as a nursing supervisor. Prior to Clarks Summit, she worked for the George Washington University Hospital neonatal unit and was featured in a special Look Magazine article on the new infant facility in the Washington, D.C., medical center. Through the years, she also cared for those at the Scranton State General Hospital and the Visiting Nurses Association. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Carbondale. Surviving are eight children, Kathleen Vaverchak and husband Bill; Patricia McHale and husband John; all of Carbondale; Joseph McGraw and wife Cynthia, Richmondale; Lorraine Piatkowski and husband Thomas; and Thomas McGraw and wife Cynthia, all of Vandling; Michael McGraw and wife Maria, Carbondale; the honorable Sean P. McGraw, magisterial district judge, Vandling; and Anne McGraw, Carbondale. Also surviving are grandchildren attorney Joseph G. McGraw, Erin Mitchell, Dr. Tara McGraw, Patrick McGraw, Michael McGraw, Katie Piatkowski, Matthew McGraw and Julia McGraw; great-grandsons, Liam and Killian McGraw; a sister-in law, Mary McGuire, Clarks Summit; and two nephews, John M. Hart Jr., Scranton; and John E. Coyne III, Philadelphia. She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Marybeth McGraw Peterson, and two brothers, Jack and Andrew Kohut. The family would like to express its gratitude to Dr. Kenneth Sebastianelli, Dr. Pancholy, Dr. Ramakrishna, Dr. Gillick, and Mary Ellen O'Malley for the care they provided. The funeral will be Wednesday from Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 74 N. Main St., Carbondale, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, by the Rev. James Price, CP, pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
